Where Are the Democrats? The Fight Against Trump Needs Fighters —Not Bystanders
A Party in Crisis, A Movement in Limbo
It’s been nearly two weeks since Donald Trump was sworn in again, and for many Democratic activists, the most shocking thing isn’t what he’s done—it’s the silence from Democratic leaders.
In just a handful of days, Trump has pardoned January 6 rioters, threatened economic sanctions on Colombia, and blocked federal funding for critical programs, including Meals on Wheels and cancer research. Yet, instead of mounting a full-scale opposition, many Democratic leaders seem hesitant, uncertain, or simply absent.
Where is the fire? Where is the outrage?
Activists, progressive leaders, and even rank-and-file Democrats are demanding more. They want a party that fights, not one that lingers on the sidelines issuing lukewarm statements. If the Democratic Party wants to rebuild, it needs to start acting like an actual opposition party—right now.
The Democrats’ Messaging Problem
The frustration among progressives is palpable. After Trump’s funding freeze, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the decision “outrageous”—but then delayed a meeting on how to respond for nearly 24 hours. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, rather than addressing the public’s growing fears, offered reassurance that “God is still on the throne.”
The Democratic National Committee (DNC), meanwhile, dusted off an Obama-era slogan about “Wall Street vs. Main Street” in an attempt to counter Trump. The response? Over 1,700 mocking replies on social media demanding real action, not recycled campaign rhetoric.
Activists like Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, put it bluntly:
“It’s like they’ve shown up to a knife fight with a cheese stick.”
This isn’t just about optics. The lack of a strong response is actively hurting the Democratic Party and demoralizing its base. If Democrats appear weak, if they seem like they aren’t willing to fight for their voters, why should anyone show up for them in 2026 or 2028?
A Lesson from the Resistance: Words Matter, but Actions Matter More
The Democrats’ current hesitation contrasts sharply with the Resistance movement of 2017. Back then, Democrats seized every opportunity to push back against Trump. They blocked legislation, rallied in the streets, and dominated social media with sharp, effective messaging.
Now? They are so worried about not appearing “shrill” that they are missing the moment.
But the rules of political engagement haven’t changed—Trump certainly hasn’t. What’s different is that Democratic leadership is treating his second presidency as just another administration, rather than the existential crisis that it is for immigrants, working families, and marginalized communities.
Democrats must go on the offensive. That means:
✔ Filibustering and blocking Trump’s legislative agenda at every turn.
✔ Using every procedural tool available to delay and disrupt his policies.
✔ Creating viral, hard-hitting social media content that actually resonates with voters.
✔ Speaking plainly about what Trump is doing and how it will hurt everyday Americans.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is already taking action, blocking pardoned January 6 rioters from holding office in his state and vowing to resist unlawful deportations. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making direct-to-camera videos on Instagram and X, breaking down Trump’s actions in simple, compelling language.
More Democrats need to follow their lead—or risk losing their base entirely.

The Fight is Just Beginning
Democrats have a choice: Sit back and let Trump dismantle civil rights, immigration protections, and social programs—or fight back with everything they have.
The party’s failure to fight in 2024 led to record-low voter turnout in key areas. If they continue down this path, they risk another disastrous election cycle in 2026.
The good news? It’s not too late to change course. The Democratic base is ready to fight—they just need their leaders to step up.
And for those who can’t afford to wait—for those whose legal status, jobs, and families are on the line—Amba Law is here to help.
