My First Job Experience: Growing and Learning at Amba Law

Addis Ababa University (AAU), established in 1950, is Ethiopia's oldest and largest higher education institution, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines.

Notably, AAU is ranked among Africa's top universities, achieving the 9th position continent-wide and 1st nationally, according to the 2024 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). This distinction places AAU alongside other leading African universities, including those in South Africa. The university is renowned for its research contributions and houses several specialized institutes, including the Institute of Ethiopian Studies.

When I graduated from Addis Ababa University (AAU) in July 2024, I had no idea that my first job would be working alongside Attorney Yasin G. Amba at Amba Law. In fact, I didn’t even know about the opportunity until he told me he was starting his own law firm and wanted me to join as his Legal Assistant. In November 2024, I officially started working at Amba Law, stepping into a role that would challenge and shape me in ways I never expected.

Adapting to Work Life and Overcoming Challenges

Starting this job, I quickly realized that work life is more challenging than I expected. Managing tasks, staying punctual, and meeting deadlines require a completely different level of discipline compared to university. However, instead of feeling overwhelmed, I am making the best of it. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow and improve.

One of the biggest adjustments has been working across time zones. While I am based in Ethiopia, Attorney Amba  runs Amba Law from San Diego, California. The 10-hour time difference means that while he is just starting his day, mine is nearly ending. At first, scheduling and coordination were difficult, but over time, we developed a system that works. We set clear priorities, schedule calls in advance, and ensure consistent communication to keep our workflow smooth.

Through this experience, I have gained confidence in my abilities. Before starting this job, I wasn’t fully aware of my own potential, but working at Amba Law has pushed me outside my comfort zone. I have improved my decision-making, communication, and ability to handle responsibilities. I now see that I can adapt, grow, and succeed in any environment with the right mindset and effort.

More Than Just a Job: Strengthening Bonds and Learning from Family

Yasin and I have known each other for 25 years, but strangely, this is the longest period we’ve actually spent together—even if it’s virtually. Before this, our interactions were mostly during family video calls, but now, we talk almost daily.

What makes Amba Law special is that it’s not just a workplace—it’s a family-driven firm. Our conversations aren’t just about work; we talk about life, family, and everything in between. Yasin, as my big brother, has been a great mentor—not just in my role as a legal assistant but in life as well. He gives me guidance, encouragement, and advice, just like an older brother should.

In addition to gaining professional experience—like sending professional emails, improving punctuality, and learning time management—I am also learning valuable life lessons. Working with someone who truly believes in me has made me more confident and motivated to grow.

Learning American Culture Through Legal Practices

Working alongside Attorney Yasin G. Amba at Amba Law has provided me with a unique window into American culture and customs, particularly through the lens of the U.S. legal system. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of American societal values but has also highlighted the intricate relationship between law and culture in the United States.

The American legal system is deeply intertwined with the nation's cultural norms and societal values. Through my work at Amba Law, I've observed how legal proceedings reflect broader American ideals such as individualism, equality, and justice. For instance, the emphasis on the "rule of law" in the U.S. underscores a collective agreement that laws govern society, ensuring fairness and preventing arbitrary actions.

Looking Ahead: Growth, Learning, and New Opportunities

As I continue this journey at Amba Law, I look forward to learning even more. Every day brings new experiences, and I know that this role will shape me into a more skilled and well-rounded professional.

Balancing caseworks, time zones, and family conversations has become part of my daily routine—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Because at Amba Law, we are not just colleagues; we are family—and that’s what makes this experience truly special.

I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I can’t wait to see how we continue to grow and build something meaningful together.
