On March 7, 2025, Ismael pleaded guilty in a Seoul court to charges including obstruction of business and violations of the Minor Crimes Act; his trial faced delays due to his late arrival and inappropriate attire.

Johnny Somali, born Ramsey Khalid Ismael on September 26, 2000, in Phoenix, Arizona, is a first-generation American live streamer.  

He has made conflicting claims about his heritage, at times stating his father is Somali and his mother Ethiopian, though these assertions remain unverified. ​  

Provocative Nature of His Streams 

Ismael began his streaming career in May 2023, initially using platforms like Twitch before being banned for his controversial content. He then moved to Kick and later to Rumble, where he continued to stream his interactions as a tourist in various Asian countries, including Japan, Thailand, and Israel. ​ 

1) Legal Issues in Japan 

In 2023, while in Japan, Ismael made anti-Japanese taunts towards locals, including comments about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and threatened to bomb Japan with nuclear weapons on a train.  

His behavior led to his arrest on suspicion of trespassing and conspiracy to obstruct business. He was fined ¥200,000 (approximately $1,400) and subsequently deported. ​  

2) Legal Issues in Israel 

On March 25, 2024, Ismael traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel, where he became involved in altercations with local Arab and Jewish people. On April 5, 2024, he live-streamed himself at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, attaching images of Harvey Weinstein, Adin Ross, and Jeffrey Epstein to the wall. On April 7, 2024, he was detained at a protest in Tel Aviv for sexual harassment of a female police officer. ​

Ismael's actions in South Korea have been particularly egregious:​ 

Disrespecting National Symbols: On October 7, 2024, he kissed and performed lewd acts on the Statue of Peace in Seoul, a monument honoring victims of wartime sexual slavery. ​ 

Public Disturbances: He played explicit content on public transportation and caused disruptions in convenience stores, leading to multiple legal charges. ​ 

Physical Altercations: His behavior led to several physical confrontations with locals, resulting in assaults during his live streams. ​ Ismael's actions have not only led to legal repercussions but have also sparked public outrage in South Korea, leading to physical altercations and widespread criticism.  

Notably, on October 24, 2024, while live streaming in Seoul, Ismael was approached by an unidentified individual who struck him in the face and destroyed his smartphone. In another incident, he was assaulted by a local YouTuber and former Korean Navy SEAL, Dalgeun Yu, during a live stream. Johnny, before he was arrested for his own actions, was taken into custody by Seoul police for his own protection after being assaulted during a live stream. This incident marked the third attack against him within a week, reflecting escalating public outrage over his disrespectful behavior, including defacing a significant memorial and causing disturbances in public spaces. 

These altercations reflect the intense public outrage in South Korea over Ismael's disrespectful behavior, underscoring the serious consequences of disruptive actions and the importance of respecting local laws and cultural norms while abroad.

As of March 2025, Ismael faces several charges in South Korea:​ 

• Obstruction of Business: This charge stems from an incident on October 17, 2024, where Ismael disrupted operations at a convenience store in Seoul's Mapo District by pouring instant noodles onto a table and playing loud music after being denied alcohol. In South Korea, obstruction of business is a serious offense, punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine not exceeding 15 million won. ​ 

• Violations of the Minor Crimes Act: Ismael faces two counts under this act. The first involves accosting pedestrians while holding a bag of foul-smelling fish, causing public discomfort. The second pertains to disturbances on public transportation, where he played loud, inappropriate content, including North Korean music, leading to his ejection from a bus. ​  

• Travel Ban: He is currently barred from leaving South Korea until his legal matters are resolved. ​​The travel ban serves as a legal measure to ensure that Ismael remains in South Korea to face the charges and participate in the judicial process. Such restrictions are commonly applied in cases where there is a concern that the individual might attempt to evade legal proceedings by leaving the country. 

On March 7, 2025, Ismael appeared in the Seoul Western District Court and pleaded guilty to the charges of obstruction of business and the two violations of the Minor Crimes Act. His trial has been postponed to April 9, 2025, to address an additional obstruction of business charge. ​

If convicted on all counts, Ismael could face significant imprisonment. The obstruction of business charge alone carries a potential sentence of up to five years. When combined with the penalties for violations of the Minor Crimes Act, his total sentence could span multiple decades. However, in the United States, first-time offenders often receive more lenient sentences, and it is uncommon for them to serve such extended periods.
